One week ago, Dr. Tanya Manning-Yarde and I presented our poetry at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City on Saturday, October 28, 2017. We were joined by dozens of family members and friends to celebrate the release of our books in September 2017. Tanya published her first book, Every Watering Word (Wasteland Press) and I had published my third book, Honeysuckle Me (Wasteland Press). We shared the stage with two other spoken word poets, Davinna Thrower and Cheyenne Christmas, and it was a beautiful evening.
I was especially excited because I was fortunate enough to book my cousin, jazz percussionist Eric McPherson, saxophone player Abraham Burton, and bassist John Hebert to accompany my performance.
A portion of the proceeds went to support various organizations. I supported The Innocence Project, Candice's Sickle Cell Anemia Fund Inc., United for Puerto Rico, Tim Duncan's 21 Virgin Islands Hurricane Relief, and the United Negro College Fund, and bought two coats to donate to the United Federation of Teacher's Coat Drive, which is being done in collaboration with the Coalition for the Homeless. Knowing that I was able to make financial contributions to various social justice organizations was even more fulfilling than receiving praise and applause for my work!
So many people told Tanya and I that we should do other showcases, and it's in the works! We are so grateful for the love and support!
